Early passenger (ships, sail and then steam) followed by the graceful ocean liners docked in Durban.

The development of tugs and the battle of the sand was critical in Durban harbour’s development.
Immigrants including Indian and Chinese (for a while) indentured workers came to this city by boat
The port played a major role in the conflicts in South Africa – Zulu Wars, Anglo Boer Wars and the two world wars.
As Durban grew both as a city pleasure boats became part of its harbour landscape
