Rorke's Drift: shown here is the grave of James Rorke, the first lieutenant of the Buffalo Border Guard and the man whose name became a household word although he himself had died four years before the famous siege. A farmer and trader, he built a thatched house with eleven rooms later used by the army as a field hospital. His homestead, then occupied by a Swedish missionary, became an improvised strongpoint against a Zulu impi of between 3500 and 4000 men.
